Nigeria, officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a federal constitutional Republic located in West Africa. With a population of over 211 million people, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the United Nations’ seventh most populated country in the world. Nigeria was a British colony from the late 19th century until it gained independence in 1960. It has been the largest economy in Africa since 2007. Nigeria’s diverse culture has been influenced by its geographic location, which has allowed it to interact with other African, European, and Asian cultures. The official languages of Nigeria are English and Yoruba, but over 580 languages are spoken in the country. Nigeria’s largest ethnic groups are the Igbo, the Hausa and the Yoruba. Nigeria is home to many tourist destinations such as the Nigerian National Museum in Kano, the Osun Sacred Grove, the Yankari National Park, and the Bénin City Palace, among others. The Nigerian economy is based on the production and export of oil, natural gas, and agricultural products. Nigeria is also known for its rich natural resources, including bauxite, natural gas, and crude oil. The country is a member of many international organizations, including the United Nations, the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States and the Commonwealth of Nations. In recent years, Nigeria has been facing challenges such as corruption, poverty, and security issues, but the government is working to address these challenges.
