The Iraqi government is reportedly planning to offer the Habbaniya residential city project to investors. Habbaniya, located in the western Al-Anbar Province, is 85 kilometers (53 miles) west of Baghdad. The city is close if not the same place as the former RAF Habbaniya military airfield, where a battle took place in 1941 during World War II. Lake Habbaniyah is also nearby.
Construction and Housing Minister Benkin Rikani headed a committee that oversaw plans to build new cities in an effort to relieve a housing shortage in the country. The minister discussed the details of the project during a meeting and confirmed that investors can take part in the project once designs and procedures to acquire the land are completed.
The minister also mentioned that Iraq plans to build at least 10 new residential cities similar to the Bismaya City project that is currently under construction in Baghdad. Bismaya is expected to have 100,000 homes once completed, and it is just one of several urban development projects that the country plans to launch over the next few years. These projects range from transport, entertainment, residential areas, and other sectors, including health and welfare.
Iraq aims to achieve economic growth through these projects, which are part of a larger effort to rebuild the country’s infrastructure following years of conflict.
